One of My Best Life Decisions
Andrea Lim
"Like most other people, I never gave a second thought to life insurance.
When lymphoma struck Andrea Lim, her life was turned upside down. Luckily for her, life insurance helped pay her expensive medical bills
Like most other people, I never gave a second thought to life insurance. I now thank my lucky stars that in spite of my ambivalent attitude towards it when I was younger, I still got myself covered. As the saying goes, life can be unpredictable.
My life was perfect until I was 26 years old. Pregnant with my second child, I was suddenly plagued with severe backaches that no painkiller seemed able to relieve. Then one day, I woke up and could not feel my legs; they were both numb. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan revealed that I had a tumour in my spinal cord.

An emergency operation was performed at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and the tumour was removed. I was diagnosed with lymphoma and told that had I waited any longer, I would have become permanently paralysed.
Unfortunately, I had to terminate my healthy pregnancy - a devastating decision, but one that was necessary in order to save my life. Plus, I want to be around for my oldest child - she needs her mother. I started treatment at the National Cancer Centre in the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Cancer is not cheap to fight. My operation in TTSH came to $20,000 while the six rounds of inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy sessions amounted to a total of $80,000. A staggering amount to accumulate in just four months.
My life insurance plan came to my rescue. I honestly do not know what I would have done without it. Because I had taken my insurance policy early, my hospital bills including the chemotherapy sessions were fully covered. I cannot begin to describe my sense of relief. While going through such a traumatic ordeal, the last thing I needed to worry about was my finances and how I was going to afford all the medical expenses.
I now know that life insurance is very important and it is good to get when you are younger. The irony of life is that when we are young, we don't realise just how crucial it is to get ourselves covered and protected. When you are older, it might be too late. My only regret now is that I did not increase my critical coverage when I could. My advice to everyone reading this is to not hesitate - it is never too early to start. Get your life insurance now while you are still young and healthy. After all, it is your responsibility to protect both yourself and your loved ones. The power is in your hands.
You Never Know What Cards Life Will Deal You
Han Soo Li
You never know what cards life will deal you. In January 2015, I had a tumour removed from my ovary, followed by chemotherapy. While it was an extremely trying period in my life, I was blessed to have the love and support of family members and friends.
Upgrading to a comprehensive insurance plan ensured that when Ms Han Soo Li was hit by cancer, medical bills were the last thing on her mind. Instead, she could focus her energy on her recovery. Here, she tells her story.
I am also lucky that I chose to go with a dedicated insurance consultant, Mr Giam from Prudential. I have known him for many years. And I cannot thank him enough. It was because of his advice that I had decided to upgrade my medical coverage and I was diagnosed with cancer just after. Mr Giam was like a friend, giving me information and advice pertaining to my medical claims — both before and after treatment. The bills were big but my insurance covered all my costly medical treatments and bills — something that cannot be avoided nowadays due to increasing medical costs. I am so glad that I had this safety net in place. I can only imagine the kind of unnecessary financial hardship this would have caused to my family otherwise.
Having a good insurance advisor whom you can trust and depend on, is such an overlooked thing. It’s only during tough times that you realise what truly matters in life. Thanks to his commitment, Mr Giam is more than an insurance advisor to me. He is my friend.and I have recommend Prudential and Mr Giam to a number of my friends.
Being protected with a good insurance plan early has ensured that I have no regrets. And I cannot recommend enough getting the right insurance plan.
